Board game illustration is an exciting field that allows artists to create captivating and immersive visual worlds. As a freelance illustrator, I am always enthusiastic about contributing to projects where imagination plays a central role and is closely connected to visual storytelling. In this context, board game illustration offers an especially rich creative playground. It allows artists to explore a wide range of themes, from science fiction and fantasy to historical games, strategy games, mystery games, and more.
The market has grown significantly in recent years, increasing in France from around €300 million in 2000 to approximately €700 million in 2024. Today, almost every theme imaginable can be found in the world of board games.
My approach is similar when I create games for magazines, such as Le Journal de Mickey or Super Picsou Géant. The game concept needs to spark the imagination, connect with the artwork, and sometimes support a narrative. The proposed worlds must feel immersive and diverse: the goal is to make people want to play!
A good game is above all well-designed, with or without illustrations
You probably know some excellent games with little to no artwork. Here are a few examples: Jungle Speed, Time’s Up, Taboo, 6 Nimmt!…
Despite the lack of prominent illustrations, these games have achieved great success and provide enjoyable moments with family and friends. They are often short, social games focused on interaction and entertainment, sometimes referred to as "party games" or "drinking games" in more casual settings.
According to some estimates, these types of games account for around 20 to 30% of the French market.
Even without illustrations—or with very little artwork—the overall visual identity remains essential. I personally can't think of a successful game that is visually dull, poorly designed, or outdated in terms of its graphics. Successful games all have a strong identity and careful attention to design and packaging, which clearly demonstrates the impact of visuals on a product.
The Importance of Illustration in Board Games
Most board games on the market require a certain level of immersion, which is often achieved through illustration. Artwork helps establish the overall atmosphere of a game at a glance.

Here again, you probably know some essential references: 7 Wonders, Arkham Horror, Everdell, Scythe, Tokaido, Wonder Book…
Strong graphic design captures attention, tells a story, and immerses players in the world of the game. However, board game illustration is not limited to atmospheric or narrative visuals; it can also directly enhance the gameplay experience.
A great example is Dixit, where the entire game mechanic is built around the illustrations provided. We can also mention escape room games designed for home play, where players must carefully observe the artwork in order to progress.
My experience creating magazine games
For many years, I have regularly collaborated with magazines to illustrate and also create visual games: puzzles, illustrated riddles, and interactive activities for both children and adults.

These projects have taught me how to work within precise constraints: following specific formats, capturing the attention of a diverse audience at a glance, and above all, telling a story or conveying an idea through clear and engaging visuals.
As mentioned above, each illustration must be both functional and enjoyable—an essential balance in the world of board games.
A few examples of board game projects
In the educational game below, I illustrated large game boards (or panels, as they can also be displayed vertically) representing six different environments: a forest area, a farming area, an orchard area, a suburban area, an urban area, and an area focused on the water cycle.
The goal was for players to place different cards on the boards, replacing practices considered harmful to the environment with more sustainable alternatives.

Another example: a quirky card game centered around the theme of forests and mushrooms. The illustrations were created using vector graphics.
